Giving Back
In honor of Crooze’s 15th birthday, we want to support the Nevada SPCA who saved her and found her a forever home.
Crooze’s Story
Having grown up with rescue dogs and volunteer time at the humane society, I knew just how many pets were at the shelters waiting for their forever homes and needing our support. When I decided I was ready to get the first dog of my very own, I wanted to adopt from a shelter. I had a few breeds in mind but otherwise went in with an open heart. I visited a variety of shelters in Las Vegas and ultimately ended up going back to the Nevada SPCA
Miss Crooze had just been brought in and was about 12 weeks old when I met her. With a gentle lick of my hand and a wag of her tail, I knew I wanted to bring her home with me. She was deemed a border collie mix and the shelter had called her ‘Ireland’ on her paperwork in honor of her heritage. This sweet little pup was found in a box in a parking lot. Someone had left her behind, unwanted and uncared for. I am grateful every day that someone found her and brought her to the SPCA.
This girl has lived an incredible life. She’s hiked hundreds of miles with me, and run hundreds more. She’s gallivanted around Death Valley and Yellowstone National Parks (I was working in the parks at the time of her arrival). Our days were spent hiking and running and enjoying the great outdoors. She’s proven time and time again that she’s smarter and more fit than I will ever be!
During these years, Crooze learned to be incredible at frisbee, in addition to perfecting her recall and off-leash skills. We also learned so many helpful tricks for exploring the outdoors safely. She learned to wait before jumping, to get on or off things on command, and so much more than just ‘sit’ and ‘stay’ (though she mastered those too!).
She worked at a winery in Napa Valley, chasing sheep for fun and romping with the owner’s Golden Retrievers. She’s walked on frozen lakes and frolicked in the snow, living in Minnesota. She’s splashed in the Pacific Ocean and the fresh water of the Great Lakes. Over the past 15 years - and hopefully for many more - she’s brought so much joy and love into my life.
In honor of all the love she has brought me, and the good work that the Nevada SPCA does every day, I want to celebrate her birthday this year by giving back. There are countless pets in southern Nevada who need our love and support. Since I can’t adopt them all - Crooze would actually hate that - I am fundraising for this wonderful organization this October.
